Dutch take down Rams in men’s tennis match

MOUNT VERNON – Playing in a third consecutive 5-4 match, the Central College men’s tennis team won another non-conference road match at Cornell College. The Dutch (2-7) relied on the second half of its lineup to beat the Rams (7-4). Central won the No 2 and No. 3 doubles matches and also won at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 in singles. It was this group’s third match in three days.


“Our spirits were up but our legs were tired,” coach Ryun Ferrell said. “They persevered and decided they weren’t going to be denied. It was an amazing match to watch.” Alex Slaymaker (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) finished off a perfect 6-0 weekend in a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles. He and Ayden Fletcher (junior, Waukee) also won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.


“He had a really good weekend,” Ferrell said. “He’s cool under pressure and doesn’t play like a freshman. He doesn’t freak out and gets to work.”
Travis Subbert (freshman, McKinney, Texas, North HS) won the final match of the night to clinch the team win in 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Subbert and Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (freshman, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS) won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles. Chedzoy also won 6-0, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
“They are so aggressive,” Ferrell said. “They how to play doubles.”
The Dutch travel to Grinnell College for a 1 p.m. match Saturday.
