Fred V. Hull

April 14, 2025

Fred V. Hull passed away on April 7, 2025 in Eagan, Minnesota of complications from
Alzheimer's disease. Fred was born on December 30, 1942 in LaJunta, Colorado. His
parents were Kenneth Hull and Frances (Murphy) Hull.
Fred graduated from Ordway High School in Colorado in 1961 and went on to get his
BA and MA from the University of Northern Colorado. In June of 1966 he was married
to Cheryl Rhatigan of Monticello, Iowa, and they had two children, Scott and Nancy.
Fred taught school in Tacoma, Washington for two years before enlisting in the Army in
1968. He was recognized as the outstanding trainee in both Basic Training and
Advanced Individual Training. He was a proud Veteran of two years, including one year
in Vietnam in the 101 st Airborne Division.
Fred continued his work in education as a teacher in Monticello, Iowa before becoming
a principal in Kalona, Brooklyn, and Knoxville, Iowa where he spent the last 20 years of
his career. Fred loved the students and always tried to know everyone by their first
name. He impacted countless students over the years, and it gave him great pleasure
when a former student would see him around town and thank him for helping keep them
on a good path.
Fred was a big Iowa Hawkeye fan and loved to golf despite never becoming good at it.
His greatest joy in life was being a grandpa, and he made that his full-time job after
retiring. He loved nothing more than entertaining his grandkids with silly games and
stories and watching them play sports as they grew older.
He is survived by his spouse, Cheryl, of almost 59 years, and his two children – Scott
(Cara) Hull of Eagan, Minnesota and Nancy (Jason) Case of Longmont, Colorado; his
five grandchildren – Emily and Sam Hull, and Drew, Max, and Logan Case; and his
brother Chuck (Lana) Hull and sister Karen Poulignot, both in Colorado.
Fred will be buried in Monticello later this Spring with a family memorial service.
