Memorial contributions may be made to the Comfort House in Pella.
Susan was born on May 23, 1947, to Carl and Fern Robuck and grew up in Marion
County, Iowa. She graduated from the Pleasantville High School Class of 1965. In July
1966, shortly after James’s discharge from the Navy, Susan married the love of her life,
James Bacon. The couple first lived in town, then moved to the countryside north of
Pleasantville in early 1967. In 1985, they relocated to a farm south of Attica, until 2005,
when they moved to their family farm south of Knoxville.
Together, Susan and James raised five sons, and Susan built a respected career with
the United States Postal Service, serving as Postmaster in Bussey, and a mail clerk in
Pleasantville, and Swan. Her deep love for the Bussey community was evident in
everything she did. After retiring from the Postal Service in Bussey, she continued to
serve the community as the director of the Bussey Public Library.
A strong, caring, and thoughtful woman, Susan led by example especially through her
active involvement as a 4-H Club leader. She was a devoted member of her church and
enjoyed quilting, playing cards, and spending time outdoors. Among her favorite
pastimes were picking raspberries and gooseberries, mushroom hunting, and raising
sheep, something she took great pride in.
Susan passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on September 15, 2025, at
the Comfort House in Pella. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years,
James Bacon; her sons: Steve Bacon, John (Kathy) Bacon, Jimmy (Barbara) Bacon,
Danny (Corlissa) Bacon, and Billy (Jessica) Bacon; 17 grandchildren: Dustin, Tyler,
Claira, Rachel, Haley, Jordan, Carter, Ryan, Sammy, Ciara, JT, Robert, Justis, Julian,
Olivia, Elisha, and Naomi; and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many
nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Fern Robuck; and her sisters,
Nancy Richards and JoAnn Robuck. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and
loved her.
