Gene Cain
January 08, 2026
Gene Cain, age 60, of Chariton, passed away Monday, December 29, 2025.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Memorials in Gene’s name may be made in care of the family.
Clyde Gene Cain was born April 20, 1965, in Concord, California to Larry Cain
and Suzy (Len) Shepard. He moved to Iowa and was raised around the Melcher-
Dallas area. He was later blessed with five beautiful children: Dana, Emily, Rachel,
Blake and Rayanne.
Gene was a man who took great pride in doing thing right. For many years, he
owned and operated his own carpet-laying business, serving Marion County, as
well as the Denver, CO metro area, his chosen home away from home, where he
lived for much of his adult life. A true perfectionist, Gene was known for his
careful craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Gifted with a sharp mechanical mind, Gene could fix just about anything. From
repairing lawn mowers to overhauling cars and motorcycles, he had a natural
ability to understand how things worked and the patience to make them work
better. When Gene set his mind to a task, he saw it through.
In his free time, Gene found peace outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing and
spent many hours searching for arrowheads. Above all else, Gene lived life on his
own terms. Independent, self-reliant, and true to himself, he was guided by one
clear principle that defined his life: “I did it my way”.
He will be greatly missed by his parents: Suzy & Len Shephard; children: Dana,
Emily, Rachel and Rayanne; sisters: Lynnette (Jay) Jensen, Michelle Vairo,
Rebecca Cain, Jay Jay Krutsinger, and Louise Cain; and many other relatives and
friends.
Preceding him in death was his father, Larry Cain, stepfather, Wayne Vairo; son,
Blake Cain; and sisters: Mary Cain and Lori Cain.
Gene was a man who took great pride in doing things right.
