Schwimley joins Pella Regional’s Medical Staff

Pella Regional Health Center is pleased to welcome Neil Schwimley, DO, FAANA, FAAOS to the medical staff beginning July 31. Dr. Schwimley is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist with over 25 years of medical and military experience. He will practice in the Pella Regional Medical Clinic in Pella.
“I have dedicated my career to serving my country and my patients through compassionate, evidence-based orthopedic care,” said Dr. Schwimley.
Dr. Schwimley earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in 1998 and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Mount Clemens General Hospital in Michigan. He later pursued advanced fellowship training in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery at the renowned American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.
Throughout his distinguished military career, Dr. Schwimley deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as the sole orthopedic surgeon in Forward Surgical Teams, providing life-saving surgical care under combat conditions. His leadership and dedication earned him multiple commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal and several Meritorious Service Medals.
In his medical practice, Dr. Schwimley has held key roles at leading institutions, including Mahaska Health Partnership and the 88th Medical Group at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Recently, he served as a Staff Orthopedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Specialist with Cedar Valley Medical Specialists, providing care for athletes and active individuals across all levels. He also served as Team Orthopedic Surgeon for the University of Northern Iowa, William Penn University, Wartburg College, Oskaloosa High School, and Waterloo West High School.
An educator and mentor, Dr. Schwimley has served as Associate Clinical Faculty for Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Clinical Faculty for the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, and Examiner for the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery. His academic involvement reflects his passion for training the next generation of medical professionals, along with his passion for life-long learning.
Dr. Schwimley is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (FAAOS) and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (FAANA). He is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons.
When not in the clinic or operating room, Dr. Schwimley can be seen on the sidelines or courtside supporting local athletic programs, mentoring young physicians, and continuing his lifelong commitment to excellence in orthopedic care.
